I am sure quite a few are unsure or get swept up in the whole UCAS thing and sometimes don't want to say that they aren't that keen on the course they have chosen

Your DD is v sensible in expressing her views about medicine at this stage - I trained in the early 80s and retention at the time was much greater than it is now, there was more support and generally junior doctors might have got earache, very long hours and lots of work, but they were generally supported by the seniors, free accommodation, cheap food and the belief it would get better.

Nowadays there retention is much lower, many leave and find other careers, there is far less day to day support etc etc - the only good thing is that there is probably more career flexibility

If your DD wants to do a gap year then let her - take the pressure off and tell her to let the school know that you are happy that she isn't applying this year
