How many people here who live(d) in chelmsford opted to send their son or daughter to a grammar school outside of chelmsford based on their scores? Our top choice would be kegs, but should our son not get enough points we'd definitely consider another of the grammar schools if his score was good enough - either colchester, westcliff, or southend. I know there are school buses so the journey doesn't worry me particularly. But I just wondered how others faired who did the same, and what the experience is like? Was it a good decision in the end to go to a grammar further afield over the local state school? (our local state would be moulsham which is also considered a good school)
Hi there, we did! Our son missed out on KEGS by 0.7 of a mark

and was offered CRGS which I placed second on the CAF. For me, it was the only compromise because I felt WHSB and SHSB was a touch too far on journey time (est 90mins). However, having visited both KEGS and CRGS, I also felt that CRGS was far better suited to my son. He gets the (school) bus from a stop at the end of our road and is dropped back on our road later in the day. I chose the bus company precisely because it minimised different legs to his journey and when he’s older, he’ll easily be able to walk to the stops each way. It takes him a little over an hour each way and he reads, chats, plays games on his phone during that time. Does it annoy him that he has to get up at 6.30am, knowing that his sister gets up often an hour later? (She’s at CCHS). Yes! Does he complain about it? Not once. Is he getting used to it? Yep. The transition from primary to secondary is a shock to the system for pretty much all kids, irrespective of journey to and from school. He went from a lift in each day to a journey on a bus by himself, bus pass, lanyard, equipment etc etc. But here we are, 1.5 terms in and it’s as though he’s always done it. He does one club in the evening as it wouldn’t be fair to not allow that so we pick him up on that evening. Of course, I’m hyper vigilant and keeping everything crossed that he fully settles and it all pans out. Sorry for the essay in response and good luck!
