I think the guidance you are providing (register, style, audience) and the correct person (1st, 3rd) should do the trick. The guidance we had from the tutor was also to use many big/interesting words (haha), which seemed to do the trick.
Last point was that the split of time used was more 35/25, with more time taken by the comp than the creative writing. So needs to be pretty sharp, but 3 paragraphs (3/4 - 1 page) is enough.
Just giving feedback on a sample of 1, although our son moved up the ranking by 100+ once comp and writing were added to Maths/VR scores.
