Essex • Re: Past paper csse

Hi all - can anyone share what percentage on Maths and English their son was getting on past papers in May last year so I can gauge if my son is on the right track?
It's a difficult question to answer because everyone is different and everyone's journey would be different. There are children who may be steadily improving, there may be children who do very well one day and then don't do well another. Also while these tests are standardised, they are also different and it's difficult to compare different children and different tests without knowing more about both. And also although a consistent good score in mocks is usually an indicator of performance, it doesn't guarantee a place at the school you may be thinking about.

If a child is consistently scoring low, then it may be worth rethinking the situation. If there are ups and downs, then it may be worth thinking about the areas or situations that may need revising (is it the material, is it the situation, is it the topic, is it the type of question). I would look at the way the scores may be changing and if they're improving. And generally the better the score in mocks, the more comfortable the child may be in the actual exam - but it's not a guarantee of a place.

People may simply not remember the scores - other than the general 'my child did well / my child didn't do well'!
