Essex • Re: Essex Allocations 1st March 2024

Essex CC, for its residents, employs the system whereby it is assumed that the place it offered on March 1st is accepted by the parent, unless the parent informs the admissions team otherwise (ditto neighbouring Southend on Sea City Council). Therefore it is perfectly possible for someone offered CCHS to have turned the offer down straight away and the place to have been offered out again. Essex CC manages the waiting lists for all the schools within its area until late August (even though, in the case of secondary schools, none is a 'community' school).

The Admissions Code requires parents to be given a reasonable period to accept places, but also if they haven't accepted by that first deadline, the place should not be withdrawn straight away. With the assumed acceptance system, the council won't chase people up to check that they didn't actually mean to reject he place, but haven't got round to it yet.

However, individual schools can contact the parents on the list given to them on March 1st and ask them to confirm that they do actually want the place.

So Essex can crack on re-offering places that it has had confirmed - as a positive decision by the parent to do so -are no longer required by the original applicant Places becoming vacant via the individual school either being told that they are needed, or withdrawn because the parent has not accepted even after the Admissions Code compliant (one hopes) policy of the school has been followed, will be fed back into the central system in due course, and Essex will go back to that school's waiting list.
