11 PLUS APPEALS • Re: Forthcoming appeal

I would very much appreciate some advice for our forthcoming appeal.
Our daughter (EAL) did not pass her Kent test. Her score was NVR 121, Maths 117 but her English was 101 and she needed more than 106 but overall was above the necessary score.
The headteacher appealed for her based on grades and was unsuccessful but school is happy to support us in any way we will need.
She is in top sets in maths and English and has been consistently in Year 5 and 6. She has GD in GPS and Maths mock SATs and high expected in Reading. End of year predictions are GD in all.
I was going to base it on extenuating circumstances as being EAL and prior to Kent Test, spending 6 weeks in summer in another country speaking constantly another language. Then taking the test days after returning.
Not sure if to mention both older (working now) brothers went into this grammar school?
Anyone did anything like it?
Thank you for any advise.
Hi and welcome to the forum!

There are a few comments in out FAQ https://www.elevenplusexams.co.uk/advic ... lification about children educated abroad - also mentions of the relevance of NVR in children with EAL, so may be useful to read those. The key evidence is going to come from the school concerning her English ability.

Re the extenuating circumstances, not sure how the panel will respond to this lack of English for 6 weeks but sounds like it might have been a bit of problem for her. Does she tend to read for pleasure in English? Has she been at school in England for a good length of time?

Re her brothers going to grammar school, this will have no impact on the appeal - sometimes in oversubscription appeals it is mentioned if the sibling is still at the school and may provide support etc
