11 PLUS APPEALS • Re: Non-qualification appeal & dyslexia

Hi

My husband and I are in a very similar situation with outlet daughter. Is there any chance you could share details of your appeals letter and evidence used?

My daughter’s school were of the opinion she would pass. In her school she is always in top sets but when it came to the exam although she has passed Maths & English she narrowly missed out on creative writing. Given we were expecting her to pass we further interrogated her teacher who said my daughter did write a tad slower than others as she was pressing on quite hard (they had never mentioned this before her 11+) we privately had her tested for any learning issues specifically because the test had a handwriting review in it. To our complete amazement the assessor has diagnosed her with dyslexia. We have yet to get the written report but the assessor has verbally said she is clearly of grammar school ability and for all future exams she should get extra time due to the slow processing issues demonstrated in the assessment.
We are wanting to appeal to the grammar school on the basis she is clearly of grammar school ability given she passed Maths & English & only narrowly missed the creative writing but that the reason for missing out on creative writing isn’t ability but her dyslexia. If we had been made aware of would have meant she could have accessed extra time. Which would have meant she would have been able to demonstrate her ability better.

I know I would also have to demonstrate as part of the appeal that the detriment to my daughter not going will be more than the detriment to the school as well as demonstrating she is of grammar school ability. Any pointers on how you successfully demonstrated both areas would be greatly appreciated.
It feels to me this should be easily demonstrated but I don’t want to miss evidencing anything and missing the opportunity to win an appeal.
