Would love some advice on the ‘imitating style’ aspect of the Latymer creative writing paper.
Both the sample papers on the website have the same prompt:
“You will be marked on… how well you have managed to imitate the tone and style of the passage.”
Can anyone give advice on how best I can articulate to DS what they are looking for in terms of style, and at what sort of depth? I suspect he’d do at least some of it naturally but he’s baulking at the specific instruction and I wasn’t quite sure how to steer him.
I note that tone and style are not specifically mentioned in the mark scheme, but register is.
I wonder if, as a starting point, he could look at a couple of key areas in order to make sure he can replicate this stylistically? Eg something like:
Register - does the writer use formal or informal language?
Audience - who is it for?
Language - is it descriptive, exciting, emotional?
Does anyone know how much weight is given to this aspect of the exam? Imitating the tone and style of an author is quite a sophisticated thing to do, it seems to me, and I wondered what is actually realistic to expect of a ten year old in 30 minutes. Any advice much appreciated - thank you!
