Pbhat, I think I've used the word thriving on here...in my head it's not at all about their academic performance. I used it regaring DD as she's always been happy to go to school, is engaged and interested in the work that they're covering and she's academically curious and thoroughly engaged with school life. In my opinion all of those will lead to her being as academically successful as she can be, but I don't rate it on her grades at all.
Her best friend is predicted all 9's at GCSE...my daughter isn't (mostly 8's, I think) but I don't think that means DD's not thriving as much as her friend...her friend is just a bit more academically able than DD. Equally DD's other friend is predicted mostly 7's...but this doesn't mean she's thriving any less than DD. They're a great bunch of girls, actively involved with and enjoying all parts of school life...clubs, bands, teams, council and academics. Personally, I think that's a recipe for her to achieve her best.
